Welcome to Birmingham by
Lis Hernandez, REALTOR® at ARC Realty

Let me take you for a walk, like I would with a new friend. While there are many neighborhoods to fall in love with around Birmingham, each week I'll share a selection of favorites, hoping you'll find the one that has the perfect vibe for you. Some stand out for being within a 20-minute radius of Downtown Birmingham and UABâthe University of Alabama at Birminghamâwhich, as you'll soon discover, is the heart of Birmingham and the ideal reference point for calculating distances and times. Others will win you over with their excellent schools, country atmosphere, or the irresistible idea of living in a newly built home that looks like something out of Architectural Digest. These are the neighborhoods I walk, drive through, stroll with my baby, drink coffee, have lunch with friends, and take my clients on tours in almost every day. Be sure to subscribe to our newsletter/blog to access profiles of our favorite neighborhoods. And join our virtual Neighborhood, where you can share experiences with those who, like you, were once newcomers and are now part of this vibrant community in Bham. Shall we begin?

Hi, We are originally from outside of Alabama, from Virginia and Illinois, so we have had a number of friends visit us here in Alabama for the first time. They always leave with good things to say. Some misconceptions about this state and Birmingham in general stem from the civil rights era and the terrible things that happened here during that time. Others think people here are closed-minded and undereducated, or that itâs just a boring place. That has not been our experience. âš Birmingham is a diverse city with fantastic live music offerings, great access to nature, incredible restaurants, and a whole lot of soul. âž» Jim and I both moved to Alabama over 15 years ago for jobs and have been married since 2018. Jim is a Professor of English at the University of Montevallo, and I am a Risk Manager. We are also both artists: Jimâs specialty is poetry, and mine is fine art. We have three children who attend Homewood High School and one at the middle school. We chose to live in the Hollywood area of Homewood because of the beautiful historic homes, spacious lots, walkability, great schools, and proximity to downtown Birmingham for restaurants and music. Our favorite local spots to eat include El Barrio and La Fresca. And my son swears by the hamburger at Samâs Deli. We love this community for the opportunities it has provided our kids. Theyâve participated in theatrical performances, traveled to Ireland with the Homewood Marching Band, and even had artwork shown in the downtown museum â just to name a few things. âž» You can take a look at my art on my Instagram or my Etsy shop. Jimâs most recent book of poems is called Versions of May, available online. đšđ
