We can be intense… this is also part of BHAM’s charm.
New to Birmingham and starting to notice the heat, humidity... and those mosquitoes with their own personality?
Welcome to the south.
Here nature does not hide—it is part of the landscape, the rhythm and daily life.
And beware: you're in Alabama, one of the most biodiverse states in the entire country.
That means lush vegetation, birds, insects, towering trees, and skies that change color in a matter of minutes. 🌳🌦️
☀️ Stations with character
Prepare for long, hot, and humid summers,
and mild, gentle winters—no snow shoveling required (though we do wear white from time to time! ❄️).
Of course: mosquitoes are part of the experience,
So always carry your repellent and your most summery attitude.
🚿 Hard water = skin, hair, and coffee with character
Tap water is drinkable, but it is often “hard” due to its high mineral content.
My recommendation:
Use a filter, not only to improve the taste of the water,
but also to take care of your skin, your hair and your appliances.
Your shower (and your coffee maker) will thank you!
⛈️ Severe Weather: What You Need to Know
Living in Birmingham means embracing the vibrant greenery and dramatic skies…
and yes, also that electrical energy that the storms from the south bring.
The city is located in what is known as Dixie Alley,
an area of the southeastern U.S. where tornadoes are part of the seasonal weather.
There's no need to panic—it's just part of the Southern package.
Storms can be strong here, especially in spring and autumn,
and the locals already know:
When the alarm sounds, it's time to find a safe place... and then carry on with life as usual!
🔔 Things that will make it easier for you to adapt:
Download a good weather app to receive alerts (ALWx or the Weather Channel are local favorites).
Know your haven at home: an indoor bathroom, basement, or windowless closet.
And if you're looking for a home: make sure it's not in a flood zone.
💛 And the beautiful thing?
All this natural combo also gives you
green parks, flowers galore, lakes inviting you to rest, and sunsets that look hand-painted.
Nature here is breathed in, appreciated, and—if you let yourself go—it makes you fall in love.
