Children, Schools and Family Services

Updated: Aug 8, 2025

Mom to Mom: Moving as a family can be exciting… but also overwhelming. I'm here to help with clear information, helpful connections, and judgment-free support.

🎓 Public School Options

In Alabama, school districts are organized by city or county. Your address determines which public school you attend, impacting your property value and educational options.

🔹 Highly rated districts in Jefferson and Shelby County:

Mountain Brook, Vestavia Hills, Homewood, Hoover, Alabaster, Helena, Pelham and Trussville

🗺️ As a REALTOR® and a mom, I can help you read those school maps through the eyes of a mom—those that think about community, safety, and yes… also connect you with other moms whose kids already attend those same schools.

📌 And if you want to go even further into detail, in an upcoming blog, I'll share a rundown of the top-ranked school districts in Jefferson and Shelby counties for academic achievement and diversity—so you can make informed decisions with peace of mind and perspective.

🏛️ Private and Religious Schools

There are many options with scholarship programs, affordable tuition, and communities that truly care for families.

📍 Examples:

  • St. Rose Catholic School

  • Holy Family Cristo Rey

  • Highlands School

  • Odyssey Early School

  • Montessori schools and Christian academies in various areas

Some have bilingual programs or a foundation of values that many families seek for their children.

🧸 Daycare and Activities for Kids

👶 Recommended daycare centers: LJCC, Highlands Day School, Primrose, Montessori

📚 Free or accessible activities:

  • Story time in libraries

  • Water jets in summer

  • Outdoor movies

  • Family walks

🧠 Special Needs Support

Therapies, diagnoses, sensory spaces: Birmingham has resources and support networks that are often not readily apparent.

🗣️ Speech, occupational, and ABA therapies:

  • Easterseals

  • Early Autism Services

  • Puzzle Piece Alabama

👶 Early Intervention:

  • The Bell Center

  • Sensory spaces with KultureCity

🎯 Also consult with the Alabama Department of Mental Health for guidelines and case management.

The Nest – Educational Resource in Spanish

Don't forget to join El Nido, a platform that brings together educational information for Hispanic families in Alabama. There you'll find articles, links, and updates that may be very useful.

You can visit their official website or follow them on social media and download many of their resources in PDF format.

💬 No one knows the doubts, emotions, and joys of this process better than another mother.

💛 Because beyond the closing of a house, what we're really celebrating is the beginning of a new stage where you and your family can grow, enjoy, and belong.

Would you like to receive the next blog comparing the districts? Write to me or leave your email address, and I'll send it to you as soon as it's ready.
